How to live as children of the Most High

What does it mean to be a child of God? What life should children of God live? How are we truly reflecting our Heavenly Father?

To be a child of God is not merely being at the receiving end of the blessing. It is not just a sugary sweet experience of floating on clouds being cuddled and spoiled by Daddy.

As children of God, our acts, our conduct, our thinking and our mind-set should mirror His. Jesus told us in Luke 6:35 how God’s children are to live:

“Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.” Luke 6:35, NLT

Why is it, that by loving our enemies we are acting as children of God? Or why should we accept being treated unfairly? Why do we need to be kind to the unthankful – even to the wicked?

Because this is what God does – all the time.

God is being treated unfairly

He is constantly being taken advantage of: He blesses and provides for his children but all too often they just use it for their own pleasure.

God is being mocked: How often have you heard people make jokes about God, or laugh at the gospel?

He is being cursed: So many people hate and resent God and blame him for all the evil in the world.

God is being rejected: He who lovingly designed and created us for a love relationship with him!

God’s very existence is being rationalised away by those whom he blessed with an extraordinary intellect.

He is being misused and abused to the advantage of selfish gain, false religion and political power.

How does God respond?

God could easily put an end to all this and destroy his mockers and enemies in one single moment. But He holds back on his anger, does not insist on getting even and clearing his name.

Instead, he is waiting – patiently and lovingly – for his enemies to turn to him. God wants to be their friend, but he does not force himself on them.

He is not happy at seeing his enemies suffer, but he weeps over their pain.

God doesn’t go around telling others how they wronged him. If one day they do turn to him, he will not take out a list with all their wrongdoings. He will not demand compensation and he will not feel triumphant over them.

How do we live as God’s children

As God’s children we need to apply these same principles on those who treat us unjustly, with contempt, take advantage of us, betray us, gossip and spread lies about us.

This is how we truly reflect our dear Father in Heaven.
